Questions about family to ask your partner

The family you grew up in shapes a lot of what you expect from a relationship. This list asks about parents and siblings, traditions you loved or left behind, how holidays worked, how affection and conflict were handled at home, and what you want to carry forward.

It also looks ahead: whether and when you want children, how you picture raising them, how close you want to live to your relatives, and what kind of home you want to make together.

These are good questions for a calm evening when you have time, and especially useful before big decisions like moving in, marriage or starting a family.

Ask about the good parts too

Family questions can drift toward old hurts. Balance them with the warm memories: a favourite holiday, a grandparent who mattered, a family joke. Hearing what someone loved about home tells you what they hope to recreate with you. It also makes the harder memories easier to share later.

Talk about kids before it is urgent

Whether, when and how to have children is one of the biggest conversations a couple has. It is far easier to start while it is still a someday question. Return to it now and then, gently and without deadlines, since many people find their answer shifts over time.

Ask these in Our Story, one a day

In the Our Story app you each answer on your own phone, and neither of you sees the other's answer until both are in. Then they unlock at the same time. A fresh daily question arrives every morning, and the library is sorted by topic for the evenings you want more.
